About my new way of blogging

Now that I’m getting back to blogging, I’m thinking a lot about how I could best promote my blog, of course. Certainly, there are many instructions to read and some researches to make – I noticed that I actually don’t know a thing about wordpress or social media. It was only recently that I’ve found out how to use Instagram, and looking at the accounts followed by thousands of people, I’m still not sure if I’ve totally figured it out. 40 followers, whoop whoop! It was quite the same for Pinterest, my flatmate needed to explain it to me, otherwise, I would definitely still be clueless. And there are still tons of apps which leave me somewhat confused. Snapchat for instance, or Dubsmash, which recently flooded Facebook like a virtual tsunami.

I don’t really mind that my social media skills give room for a lot of improvement, I can always add that to my “Things I want to do or to know or to be better at” list. And since social media can be really important for your personal or professional project, I guess I will start some reading after finishing this post.

After having published my previous post I thought about with whom I wanted to share my blog. Taking a more personal direction, I wasn’t sure if I wanted everybody to read it. Funnily, I wasn’t afraid that my mum could find out anything compromising about me, she already knows everything. I was more afraid of the possible judgement of the people I know, which means friends, friends of friends, some coworkers, some acquaintances. I’m rather introverted and so making friends usually takes quite some time, mostly because my extremely pronounced skepticism makes me dislike most people at first. So of course, I don’t want to ruin a friendship with a couple of stupid lines. But of course, I came to the conclusion that your friends like you for who you are, or in some cases, despite of who you are. So I guess that also counts for blogs. By the way, I’m sorry Linda that your guinea pig got diarrhea. It was me who had fed him all the dandelion. I didn’t know he had a dandelion intolerance. Hope we can still be friends!

Finally and as you can see, I spent way too much time thinking about how I would come across. Also, I’m somehow hoping that those who read my texts will be more inspired by the texts than by my person.

As for music, people tend to recognize themselves in a song and the most successful and powerful songs usually have lyrics which are appealing to many people, so that they can connect to it. Good music provokes an emotion but also responds to the listeners emotional state. When we’re listening to music, the person who wrote and sings the song seems less important and is slightly shoved in the background, becoming a rather abstract figure.

I think it’s the same for fictional literature, and maybe even for some non-fictional books, such as (auto)biographies. Besides a great plot, readers are hooked if one of the book’s characters inspires sympathy. This is mostly the case if the reader finds any kind of common ground between himself and the character. Besides, I think that this even contributes to creating a suspense. In my opinion, as identifying with a character, we’re also looking at an abstract reflection of a part of us. This can lead to questioning our own acts and our behavior towards others. Therefore, identifying with a character also means judging ourselves through this character. And so while reading, we constantly need to be reassured. Is the story going as I expected? What if I was in the same position? Would I have done the same thing?

It has happened to me that I was disappointed by a book’s character I firstly liked. This happened either when the character did something extremely stupid (and so I got frustrated because it was so easy to see it coming), or when the character did something against the values I support. In such a situation, I’m always wondering who’s right and who’s wrong, or if there is such a thing as the right choice. And there again, the author doesn’t take much space in the reader’s mind. At the moment of reception, his role is less important than the role of the hero, except if there are obvious autobiographical traits. But even then, I think that the reader still concentrates more on how the text he’s reading affects him.

Probably, it’s not very different with a blog. The blogger mainly has the role of a mediator and also seems rather abstract to me. Of course, I may see a part of what their life is like and what experiences they make through their eyes, but the blogger as an individual person remains an enigma for me. In the end, and again, it all comes down to just sharing stuff, may it be personal or not. And I will be glad if a few people like my texts. And if they don’t, well, they don’t.

More music

Today, I would like to talk about some more fantastic music which recently attracted my attention. It’s music written Michael Sanders or Mikey Maramag (you will find both names circulating in the internet, and both are related to the artist), an artist from California who is better known under the pseudonym Blackbird Blackbird.
By the way, it’s quite hard to find out much about his background. But still, here are a few pieces of information which can be figured from different websites:
Blackbird Blackbird’s first album Summer Heart was released in September 2010. Compared to his latest work, this album is much calmer and in my opinion it also sounds a little darker. Anyway, it’s very good electronic music, which can also be related to many other genres, from pop to chillwave. And that is what I especially like about Blackbird Blackbird’s music: it’s a mix of very different styles. Above all, it’s anything else but boring. Sometimes, it has a slight bitter sweet touch, which makes it  for me exactly the kind of music I want to listen to at the end of summer, when I’m looking back at all the events that took place and all the funny moments I’ve had. The two titles, which I definitely see as post summer music and which made me immediately fall in love, are It’s A War and All. They are both on the EP Boracay Planet which was released in October 2012.

And here are the video clips of the songs I like the most:

If you want to get some further information on Blackbird Blackbird, I recommend you to have a look at his official homepage or his Facebook Page, where you will also find many links to other websites. For more music you should definitely visit his profile on Soundcloud.

Jonas Alaska

Since I metioned him in my article about Mikhael Paskalev, I somehow have the feeling that I should definitely also shortly present the equally talented Jonas Alaska, who has already had some great success in Norway. With the release of his debut self-titled album in 2011, Jonas Alaska was nominated in three different categories for the Norwegian Grammy and he finally won in the categorie of the « Best New Act ».
Recently, Jonas Alaska released his second album If Only As A Ghost in Norway. The album’s first single I Saw You Kid immediately became one of the top 5 hits in the radio charts. After having listened to this single, I can say that it’s perfectly understandable why it became such a hit in such short time. What I especially like about this song is the fact that there’s some sort of discrepancy between the melody and the lyrics, which are very intelligent by the way. All of his songs sound very light and relaxed, but then the lyrics are quite serious. And it’s this funny mix that makes his music so interesting.
To give you a small foretaste of his music, you can find a short list of song which are my favourites below (besides the two great songs that I mention above, of course).

Mikhael Paskalev

While you’re waiting for the latest streetstyle pictures (which will come up soon), I have some great music for you. The guy I will present is one of my favourite artists, if not even my favourite. His name is Mikhael Paskalev, and his career as a musician immediately took off when he released his first platinum winning single I Spy, for which Paskalev also won Norway’s national award for Best Unsigned Act in 2012. It’s been a while since I listened to the song for the very first time and since I watched the clip, but I’m still addicted to it. And it’s a perfect remedy against the bad mood a Parisian summer can cause (to be precise, Parisian summer is a synonym for pouring rain). Mikhael Paskalev’s second and already very popular single Jive Babe is not less addictive, and every time I listen to it, I want to go on a road trip really bad and drive a Red Ford Mustang Convertible. The clip to this song is inspired by Tarantino and Twin Peaks, and I have to admit that it’s a rather strange clip, but still, it has something. And the song is really great, anyway. And since I’m a big fan since I listened to his first track, I’m really happy that Mikhael Paskalev finally released his first album What’s Life Without Losers in February this year.

To give you a first impression of how great Paskalev’s music is, you can find a short list of songs that I personally like most right below:

Susie
I Spy
Jive Babe
What’s Life Without Losers
I Saw You Kid (here, Mikhael Paskalev performs together with another talented musician, Jonas Alaska)
Hidden Track (also with Jonas Alaska)

Har Mar Superstar

It’s always nice when being disconnected from your gadgets for a couple of days, because even after a short time, being connected again opens a whole new world for you and so much interesting stuff is suddenly going on and there are plenty of things to discover.  This is how I felt when I lately logged in to my Deezer account. After just a couple of days where I hadn’t been logged in, so many new albums had been released. It was like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for nerds and music addicts. And I was Augustus Gloop in this huge music library filled with new tracks. And I discovered this charmingly weird album Bye bye 17 by Har Mar Superstar.
It’s not the kind of music you expect to be in the charts, nothing to be compared to synthetic sounding so-called music you can year on some dance music radio channels. And amongst all this purely commercial music which, thanks to all the audio editing that’s done after recording a track, always sounds the same, Har Mar Superstar’s music clearly stands out and is uncommonly refreshing. Listening to it, I felt transported to the groovy and colourful 70s where I met The Caterpillar and Austin Powers in his bright suit. And it somehow made me also think of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Virgins.
But have a look on your own:

dubstep & other genres

Before I will post more of the Paris Fashion Week circus, again, I would like to give you something fresh and unexpected for your chill out nights. Maybe some of you already know the artist I will present in the following. Around one year ago, you could hear his single Right Thing To Do featuring Jesse Ware all the time on Radio Nova. I’m talking about the British DJ and musician Aaron Jerome alias SBTRKT.
The first time I heard his music was, as I mentioned, on Radio Nova. But I can’t even say that I got addicted to his music immediately. You know, sometimes you don’t really have an opinion on some kind of music until the day where you hear a song for the umpteenth time and you suddenly notice that this song actually is really catchy. And from then on, it’s stuck in your head. This was the way I fell in love with SBTRKT’s music.

But at that time, I unfortunately wasn’t able to find out more about him, because funnily, his name was never mentioned on the radio. Or if it was, then I wasn’t able to get it because of the lovely French accent. Anyway, it is thanks to a pure coincidence that I listened to his self-titled album, which also includes the single Right Thing To Do, that I finally had the chance to finally know his name and also listen to more of SBTRKT’s music, which is a pleasant mix of Electronica, dubstep, soul and many other genres.
I hope, this article got you intrigued. If so and especially if not, you should check out the following links:
